Guest book review - Holidays with a Tail: A Tale of Winter Celebrations by Kelly Bouldin Darmofal

Young Alex is beyond excited on Christmas Eve. He knows that Christmas celebrates the birthday of Jesus Christ, and he cannot wait for tomorrow to come - he wants a puppy of his own to play with and love. On Christmas Day, he opens a large box with, yes, a puppy inside. Alex names him Zipper! However, when grandparents come bearing gifts, Zipper bounds out of the open door. Mother and Alex then begin a neighborhood adventure as they search for a runaway dog and meet neighbors with different winter holiday celebrations and traditions: the Hindu Diwali, the Jewish Hanukkah, the Latinx Las Posadas and the African-American Kwanzaa. Alex then returns home for a Christmas feast, happy with his new canine companion and the knowledge that his neighborhood is filled with amazing people who are more alike than different.

"Kelly Darmofal takes her readers on an unexpected Christmas journey that leads her readers to discover the beauty of our diverse winter holidays! Holidays with a Tail: A Tale of Winter Celebrations is a book to read aloud to all!" -- Debbie McIntyre, Principal of Jefferson Elementary School

"With warmth and cheer, Darmofal captures Christmas Day in Holidays with a Tail. A day of adventure for a boy becomes a day of learning and connecting with others for a deeper understanding of cultures and traditions that differ from his own. A great holiday read!" -- Emily M. Cagle, Media Specialist at Meadowlark Elementary School

"With vibrant illustrations and easy-to-understand language, the author introduces us to five holiday celebrations enjoyed by families of different cultures. This book is non-judgmental and depicts appreciation for the differences among us. While it is intended for children, parents might also learn something new. Holidays with a Tail is a valuable resource if we plan to raise our children with an acceptance of diversity." -- Dr. Laurie Zelinger, Child Psychologist, Author of Please Explain Vaccines to Me Because I HATE SHOTS! Guest book review by Carly Louise Wilson
Holidays With A Tail by Kelly Bouldin Darmofal, is a beautifully illustrated children’s book that is perfect for children to help explain the practices of Christmas in a range of cultures.

Acceptance of diversity comes with the educating of young minds, and I love that we are becoming a society where we have many resources at our disposal to help in the educating and learning process. As a soon to be mum I am looking forward to reading my little boy books such as this to explain other cultures in a respectful, accurate and detailed way.

The book focuses on a little boy Alex who has wanted a puppy got Christmas. He believes it will be the best friend he’s always wanted. Upon spotting a puppy he is delighted but the rambunctious ‘Zipper’ escapes, it forces Alex and his mother to chase after the puppy.

Upon their journey to retrieve their pet, Alex is curious about the celebrations of those around him. Noticing that they are following traditions not familiar to his household. His mother takes the time to explain about differing cultures, beliefs, traditions and practices and how we can all exist celebrating in our own way.

The illustrations are details, the writing easy for slightly older children and the book does contain a lot of detail, highlighting key and important words to the cultures being discussed.

A good festive book to help entertain and educate. A perfect addition to an already colourful bookshelf.

Amanda's Fall, with charming illustrations by Bijan Samaddar, depicts an event common in schools today. Young Amanda gets a concussion after falling and hitting her head during recess. While she can hear people talking, she cannot respond. Amanda is taken to a doctor for evaluation. Wisely, her parents ask for a prognosis, which in Amanda's case, is a good one. Author Kelly Darmofal offers readers her third book on TBI (Traumatic Brain Injury), encouraging parents and caretakers to alert schools and, hopefully, doctors when any child is concussed; side effects can then be ameliorated.

Studies show that Traumatic Brain Injuries represent the leading cause of death and disability in young adults in industrialized countries. According to the CDC, at least 564,000 children are seen each year for brain injury in hospital emergency departments and released.

Lost in My Mind: Recovering From Traumatic Brain Injury (TBI) (Reflections of America)
lost
Lost in My Mind is a stunning memoir describing Kelly Bouldin Darmofal's journey from adolescent girl to special education teacher, wife and mother -- despite severe Traumatic Brain Injury (TBI). Spanning three decades, Kelly's journey is unique in its focus on TBI education in America (or lack thereof). Kelly also abridges her mother's journals to describe forgotten experiences. She continues the narrative in her own humorous, poetic voice, describing a victim's relentless search for success, love, and acceptance -- while combating bureaucratic red tape, aphasia, bilateral hand impairment, and loss of memory. Readers will:

- Learn why TBI is a "silent illness" for students as well as soldiers and athletes.
- Discover coping strategies which enable TBI survivors to hope and achieve.
- Experience what it's like to be a caregiver for someone with TBI.
- Realize that the majority of teachers are sadly unprepared to teach victims of TBI.
- Find out how relearning ordinary tasks, like walking, writing, and driving require intense determination.

About the Author
Kelly Bouldin Darmofal is currently a freelance writer, wife, educator and stay-at-home mother. Despite her 1992 severe closed head injury, she graduated cum laude in Communication from Salem College (2000), later receiving a Masters in Special Education from Salem (2006). She studied Spanish in Merida, Mexico and took courses at UCLA, UNC-CH, and Wake Forest University. Kelly was employed by the Winston-Salem, NC chapter of the American Red Cross as volunteer coordinator before working in ESL at Reynolds High School, followed by a semester in Special Education at Thomas Jefferson Middle School. Kelly worked personally with Dr. Bethanie Tucker, Averett University, to be trained in Tucker Signing Strategies for Reading (2005). In 2005 Kelly joined the Forsyth Country Day School faculty in the Johnson Academic Center as an LD Specialist. In 2007 Kelly accepted a 2nd grade position at Summit School, and taught there four years until the birth of her son. She currently tutors children as a Wilson Reading Specialist and is a published writer.

She is a feature contributor to Lost Treasure magazine, and has been a speaker on the subject of TBI at Wake Forest, Salem College, and the Summit School. With the publication of online articles related to TBI in addition to her memoir, Kelly continues to advocate for the TBI of America - especially students. "No teacher in high school or college was trained to work with students like me," says Kelly, the first TBI-certified student in her high school. She admits the American military and sports organizations are now attempting to address the TBI issue. However, IDEA, or the Individual with Disabilities Education Act, has made TBI a certifiable disability category (in 1990) without assuring appropriate teacher training. She remarks on this "black hole" in education whenever possible, and relates her early TBI experiences with hopes of affecting change.

Kelly has found canine care and rescue to be both a rewarding and healing hobby. Currently she owns two rescue mutts - Mitzy and Buddie.

"Cody & Jake do it again! Along with the beautiful Sarah and the rest of the gang including some new K-9's take it to the villain with extreme prejudice! Another great read, couldn't turn the pages fast enough."

"This is a great suspenseful series and can't wait for the next book! Jake Cody and Sarah make a great team along with their fellow marine Corp friends!"

"Love all the characters, of course, especially Jake and Cody, as well as the Keys and California being the backdrop for all their adventures and heroics."

Guest book review by Carly Louise Wilson
Key West Dead by Mark Nolan is the sixth book in the Jake Wolfe series, and the action-packed twist and turns of drama continue right where the story of Jake and Cody ended in book five.

I absolutely adore this series, as not only do you get the story of Jake and his comrades, but you get to follow his romance with Sarah and this time they take a trip on a boat to the Florida keys to attend a friends wedding. But in true Jake Wolfe style, he is accompanied by his loyal and trusty best friend Cody.

But of course the trip cannot go according to plan! After all, this is a Jake Wolf story, and from the moment he attends the wedding, he has a bad feeling. A feeling which refuses to leave, and he’s not the only one sensing trouble, Cody too starts picking up on something suspicious.

After the bombing of his friends boat, and the ongoing threats Jake and Cody embark upon another gripping case, and as always, you will not necessarily expect the path it leads down.

Nolan always delivers the perfect blend of a well plotted action story with a side of humour and romance, and I’ve been hooked since book one.

Cody is the mans best friend you have always wanted, and you cannot but help get swept up in the mystery and the non-stop action. A perfectly gripping read which will have you eagerly awaiting the next instalment.

I’d recommend for those who want to get embroiled in a gripping action series which has a smidge of romance and something for everyone.

Inspired by a true story...

1854
Jacob Gusky wakes up hoping Santa has arrived. And he has... but not for Jacob, one of two Jewish boys living at the Boys’ Home of Manhattan. When a friend gifts him a tin whistle, Jacob learns the power of giving, the joy in receiving, and hears what he considers to be the sound of happiness.

1881
Recently widowed and completely out of options, Frannie takes her daughter Molly to the Home for the Friendless. “You’ll be back before Christmas?” Molly asks. Frannie gives Molly half a quilt square and keeps the other, choking on her reply.

After unearthing the tin whistle from the orphanage, he is reminded of what it felt like to have nothing, and decides to make a difference in the lives of others no matter their faith. But with so little time before Christmas morning, can he even begin to give the orphaned children of Pittsburgh what he knows they need?

"Writing this book was wonderful. Bringing aspects of the Guskys’ good works to life was more fun than I could have imagined!" ~ Kathleen Shoop

Guest book review by Carly Louise Wilson
If you have a penchant for captivatingly detailed historical reads, then I would highly recommend Kathleen Shoop. I've become an avid reader of her work over the last couple of years, and every story she writes completely encapsulates me and leaves me with all kinds of thoughts and feelings. Tin Whistle was no exception, and put me in that light-hearted Christmas spirit, and the moral of giving back and remembering those who perhaps aren't as fortunate felt prominent.

The book focuses around two characters over two differing timelines; A young Jacob Gusky in 1854 and Frannie a destitute widow who is forced to make an impossibly heart-wrenching decision.

Jacob was a poor boy who grew up in a Boys home. He's experienced having nothing, but remembers a true act of kindness when he was given a small tin whistle. Now that he has forged a successful career for himself, the memory evokes a need for him to give back.

This story is a true page-turner that totally highlighted so many thought provoking morals. To remember those who aren't as fortunate, to help people if you have the means as you never know if/when you may need it, and also that it doesn't matter your faith or religion, everyone is capable of being nice to one another.

I adored this book and would recommend to those looking for a good historically festive read. It is detailed, the imagery on point and Shoop always transports me back to another place in time and enables my imagination to run free.

Guest book review - Please Explain Vaccines to Me: Because I HATE SHOTS! by Laurie Zelinger PH.D

Shots, injections, needles, and vaccines-whatever their purpose, they all hurt. More than half of children in the 6-17 year-old range report a strong fear of needles. Nearly 25% of adults do as well. This book is for those families who cringe at the thought of getting one.

For some children, getting a shot is a major ordeal. Ramped-up anxiety can lead to tantrums, meltdowns, outbursts and even fainting. That 30-second experience can be a nightmare for parents for and nursing staff alike. This resource will help to improve that dreaded scenario.

The book opens with an engaging story for children where rhyme, colorful illustrations and characters of diversity capture a child's interest as they identify with a girl who has similar fears. The children's section is followed by a comprehensive guide for parents and caregivers, based on empirical research as well as Dr. Zelinger's decades of experience as a child psychologist, where she offers information and explicit solutions to help deal with the anxiety surrounding this common medical procedure.

Children will:
• Identify with the main character and her fear of shots
• Enjoy the colorful illustrations and happy story ending
• Learn coping mechanisms to deal with frightening situations
• Feel supported by their parents who will know how to help
• Reduce their anxiety and become more cooperative during medical visits

Parents/Caregivers will:
• Understand the reasoning behind the fear of injections
• Learn strategies to help their child before and during a medical visit
• Be better able to comfort their child

"Dr. Laurie Zelinger has done it again with another excellent child and parent-friendly book that helps to allay fears and empower families and professionals with the tools to help children develop healthy coping skills. Please Explain Vaccines to Me has it all: a relatable and simple yet engaging text in rhyme that is fun to read aloud, as well as colorful illustrations that provide an honest and relatable depiction of the emotions involved. As an experienced nurse and health educator, I see this book as a "must-have" resource for all caregivers, educators and health professionals." --Darlene Glasser, RN, MSEd

"Please Explain Vaccines to Me is a book that every parent will want to read to their child before getting a shot. It demystifies vaccinations with language that a child will both understand and want to question further. It also gives both children and parents the language they need to express their anxiety about the process and the tools to lessen that anxiety. It gets 5 stars!" --Yael Kula, MSW, LCSW (Licensed Clinical Social Worker)

Guest book review by Devorah Bergman
Wow! From start to finish, I really enjoyed reading this book. I found that the story was at a basic level to help children really understand that it is okay to be nervous about getting shots while explaining the reason for shots. I absolutely LOVE the children's artwork embedded in the book - that is a powerful tool for children to see the work of others.

The piece for parents and caregivers was great as well. I really enjoyed reading the section on "How Can I help my Child Manage Their Fear" because I get asked that question as a teacher. There are 13 strategies listed and I'm sure parents can use the variety of strategies to help their child learn about shots and help their children overcome the fear of shots.

Finally, the back of the book is GREAT with the objectives. It is a quick snapshot for parents and educators to learn about the contents of the book to decide if it is the right fit for the child.

I'm looking forward to more work by this author.

Brant is Cait’s opposite in every way, but he’s drawn to everything about the sexy newcomer―from the quiet strength that rivals the caution in her mossy-green eyes to her tough facade that he can’t wait to strip away.

As Brant works his magic, Cait’s walls come down. But as sweet as that feels, Cait knows how quickly good things can turn bad. It’s going to take more than a little trust to beat the ghosts of her past and claim the future they both deserve.

Guest book review by Devorah Bergman
Wow! This book blew me away. I've been curious about Cait's backstory since I met her in other books and this book did not disappoint. I could feel all of Cait's pain as she had to push past her demons to figure out that life is better with Brant by her side.

What can I say about Brant...he's got the hero thing in the bag and clearly is willing to go at Cait's pace. I love how he worms his way into her heart and helps her push past her demons so they can face an amazing future together.

I'm looking forward to seeing more of these two in the coming books.

Embracing Her Heart (The Montgomerys Book 1) by [Foster, Melissa]
When chef Abby de Messiéres returns to Silver Island with her sister to get their late mother’s affairs in order, she expected to inherit her mother’s bistro along with their childhood home, not to discover a half sister they never knew existed, and a handsome vacationer camped out on her mother’s patio.

Workaholic Aiden Aldridge has been sent to Silver Island on a work-free vacation, armed with a “Let Loose list,” and ordered to get a life by the much-younger sister he raised after the death of their parents. After years of focusing on his sister’s well-being, he’s blindsided by his intense attraction to the gorgeous, free-spirited Abby.

Aiden might not know much about chilling out, but he’s excellent at striking deals. He helps Abby with the restaurant in exchange for her help in tackling the items on his list. Sparks fly as Aiden and Abby work, and play, side by side. Intimate conversations lead to steamy kisses and undeniable passion. But there’s more to Aiden than Abby knows, and when the truth comes out, their new romance is put to the test, as the two find out if true love really can conquer all.
