Country Grace and Beauty Review

Country Grace and Beauty

By David Weiskircher

Jack Rhodes, a harried New Yorker, finds himself in a small town in West Virginia. Although he fled the rat race of the big city, he wasn’t quite sure what he was looking for, and he only stopped in this little town because his car broke down. But he finds the town, and the people there, tranquil. He tastes for the first time peace.

Meanwhile, his past pulls at him. It’s not letting him go easily. His past is a big part of him. He had responsibility, and he was good at what he did, and it brought him plenty of money. People relied on him. Can he leave all that behind?

He doesn’t know what he’s looking for, and doesn’t have a plan. All his life he’d hurried and rushed, and in leaving New York he hurried and rushed, making no plan, and putting no thought into what it was he was running from . . . or towards.

But people in the small town, and one in particular, starts to help him see, as he, in turn, helps them to see.

Will grace abound?

...........................................................................
MY HONEST REVIEW OF Country Grace and Beauty

Jack Rhodes needed to get away from New York and his fast-paced life. So, he left work and technology behind, and stole away to a small, quaint town in West Virginia. In leaving it all behind, he discovers the peace that he is searching for.

This short novella was a pleasant read. It made me wish I could leave it all behind and find a peaceful, sleepy little town just like Jack did. Even as short as the story was, the characters really came to life. It reminded me of an episode of The Andy Griffith Show. The plot is one that everyone can relate to. I can see a full-fledged novel surrounding this town and its characters.

Three Noisy Chickens to the Rescue

Three Noisy Chickens to the Rescue

By Diane Pike

"Grandma has three chickens that live in a pen at the bottom of the garden. They talk to one another in loud squawks and are always very noisy. One winter’s day, Alice, her granddaughter, comes to visit, but it is snowing so hard she can’t take Max the dog out for a walk.

The next day, although it has stopped snowing, Max goes outside with the chickens and disappears!"

...........................................................................
MY HONEST REVIEW OF Three Noisy Chickens

Max the dog went out walking while it was snowing. As Grandma went out to collect the eggs, her chickens got out and were playing in the snow too. When Max could not be found, it was up to the chickens to scratch Max a way out of the snow.

This was an adorable children’s story that can be enjoy by anyone. I think it would make a wonderful bedtime read, especially if you needed it to be short. I thought Heidi, Hetty and Hilda made such cute names for the chickens. They would be good for a series of books.

One Last Shoe Review

One Last Shoe: An Alex Drew Novel

By David Weiskircher

Alex Drew is back, not that he ever really left. And with him is Claire Tierney and Joe, the dog. As Alex and Claire attempt to sort out their relationship after everything that happened in To Say Goodbye, a mysterious murder occurs in the middle of a box canyon not far from Alex's New Mexico ranch. And a young girl is kidnapped. Sheriff Mike McCoy, more of a bronc-buster than a crime-buster, calls on his old friend Alex to help make things right. One Last Shoe is a thrilling read that effectively mixes humor and pathos.

...........................................................................
MY HONEST REVIEW OF One Last Shoe

When a teenager is killed, and his girlfriend disappears, Sheriff McCoy enlists the help of Alex Drew, a retired CIA operative. After the FBI is called in, Alex uses his advanced instincts to stay one step ahead, and one clue closer to solving the murder and finding the girl.

I thoroughly enjoy following Alex Drew and his wry sense of humor. His mysteries are always intriguing. I try to pit my instincts with his, and I do come up with the same questions as him. I think the camaraderie between the Sheriff and Alex helps to draw the reader in more. The way the subject of the bull kept coming up was hilarious. I really like the way the story was wrapped up in the end.

The Tears of Olive Trees Review

The Tears of Olive Trees: An Autobiographic Story Featuring Poems From Mahmoud Darwish

By AbdulKarim Al Makadma

The Tears of Olive Trees is a multi-generational non-fiction memoir of a Palestinian family’s heroic struggle against poverty, violence and oppression.

In the 1948 Nakba, the Zionists stole the AlShaikh family’s home and lands and exiled them to a refugee camp in Gaza. Rather than to return evil for evil, this incredible, heroic family struggled in peace against all odds to give their children a better life.

The Tears of Olive Trees dares to tell the truth about what really happened to the Palestinian people through the experiences of a man who lived through the events of the past fifty years first as a refugee and later as a physician and humanitarian who immigrated to the West.

˃˃˃ Featuring Poems from Mahmoud Darwish

...........................................................................
MY HONEST REVIEW OF The Tears of Olive Trees

This is an autobiography of the author detailing his life as a Palestinian refugee growing up in the Al Shati refugee camp. When Israel expropriated his father’s land and property, his father, along with all other Palestinian’s, were exiled to the camp. Karim would be in the first generation to grow up entirely in Al Shati. I was appalled to read of the persecution of this proud people. It’s unfathomable how an entire nation could be extracted from their homelands, to never see it again.

There were so many heart rending parts that made me angry that this could happen to people who never deserved it, children especially. I applaud Karim for overcoming everything that was thrown at him, and becoming a person to admire for all the accomplishments he has achieved in his lifetime. I believe it to be a testament to his parents’ love of their children. That is what kept me reading, I was so in awe of the love this family had not only for themselves, but for each other.
