Randolph the Moose lives with his mother in the Great White North. After a chance encounter with the reindeer from Santa Claus' sleigh-pulling team, Randolph finds new joy in trail running as he trains to join the reindeer in Santa's flight school. But when the head elf places him at the workshop loading dock instead (due to his tremendous bulk), Randolph has to use his brains and work ethic to earn respect at his new job... and even save Christmas.
Imagine Rudolf the red-nosed reindeer, except...
- Randolph has a healthy self-image
- Randolph has a more positive outlet for his feelings
- Randolph runs, but not away from his problems
- Randolph is pro-active, refusing to let Santa's workshop define him as a moose

Guest book review by Carly Louise Wilson
Randolph the Christmas Moose by Gerry Gibson is a beautifully illustrated festive book suitable for all ages. The book is about Randolph a moose who one day sees a group of reindeer’s running past him. He joins them, enjoying the laughs and and jokes not realising some are at his expense. They ridicule him for being different, for standing out, threatened by his goal to be part of the flight team for Santa, and try and crush his dreams.
But Randolph is tough and puts in the work to provide himself, running in his spare time and gaining employment in the loading department in Santa’s workshop. It is in this role that he becomes accepted by others, polar bears become his friends, and he manages to successfully challenge the status quo of how things get done. Eventually leading to a promotion and the salvaging of Christmas.
The book had so many important themes such as: exclusion, overcoming animosity, not being afraid to challenge what you don’t feel is right and overall acceptance. It also has a strong message about not being afraid to be different, and it is a very poignant book for children of all ages, especially in today’s society. A very empowering book that has a moral for everyone.
I also loved that Rudolph was up to no good and played pranks on other reindeer’s, so there is definitely a few moments which would earn some chuckles.
It was a fun and enjoyable read and I would happily recommend to those looking for festive books to read to their children.
