The Callaways: Book 7 and 8 Reviews

We're wrapping up the last of the Callaway Series with books seven and eight.  I hope you have enjoyed reading my reviews. I highly recommend reading this series. Again, the links to my other reviews are below:

When Shadows Fall (Callaways #7)       Somewhere Only We Know

Book 7 – When Shadows Fall

When Olivia receives a letter asking her to interview and write a biography on Molly and her group of friends, she can’t resist the challenge. Unfortunately, Molly has a stroke before she can meet her. As Olivia begins interviewing the group of friends, who were formerly in a theater group, she meets sexy Colton Callaway. Colton continues to interfere with Olivia speaking to Eleanor, his grandmother. Olivia and Colton begin to work together, going through Molly’s papers, but what Olivia discovers will rattle her foundation, and Colton is only too happy to catch her when she falls.

This was a sweet romance filled with mystery, suspense, and unexpected danger. I loved following this couple as they got to know each other. It was nice to finally find out what Eleanor and Patrick was hiding from the family.

Book 8 – Somewhere Only We Know

Burke Callaway lost his fiancĂ© three years ago in a car wreck. Even though he was working that night, a fellow coworker is accusing him of murdering her.  As if that isn’t enough to deal with, he is literally knocked into Maddie Heller, an acquaintance from his past. Maddie’s free spirit always contradicted Burke’s methodical, always-planned-out life. Fortunately, Maddie is just what Burke needs at this point in his life.

I loved Maddie’s carefree spirit, and I think she was the perfect balance for Burke. This has become my favorite coupling of all the Callaways. Ms. Freethy knows how to find the perfect mate for each of the Callaway siblings. Even if they aren’t compatible, they still work out. I can’t wait to continue reading this series with each of the cousins.

The Callaways: Book 5 And 6 Reviews

Here we go with my reviews of books five and six of the Callaway Series. The links to my other reviews are below:

All a Heart Needs (Callaways, #5)       That Summer Night (Callaways, #6)

Book 5 – All A Heart Needs

Sean Callaway has always lived the life of a rock star. Jessica is a young widow who has caught his eye. Jessica’s son Kyle has ties with the Callaway family, so Jessica and Sean have more contact than they are comfortable with. Now that Jessica has moved into a house that features prominently in Sean’s past, he shares his childhood secret with her, which brings them together to solve a mystery that’s more dangerous than they ever imagined.

I liked how their relationship was as suspenseful as solving the mystery was. Jessica’s insecurity came across as very believable. And I’m glad that there was closure between Sean and his father.

Book 6 – That Summer Night

Robert is conducting a drug trial with Shayla’s help. After a trial patient is gunned down in front of Shayla, she finds out that Robert is missing. While she is recovering from being traumatized, Robert calls her, and instructs her to contact his brother Reid for help. When she meets Reid though, she has no idea how much he will turn her world upside down.

Romance and danger go together like milk and cookies, and it was perfect for this couple. I think Reid made me swoon more than any of the Callaway guys did, and that’s saying a lot. To quote the book, “They were an explosion waiting to happen”. That says it all.

The Callaways: Book 3 And 4 Reviews

Continuing the Callaway Series, today I review books three and four. Here is the link for Books One and Two, and the introduction and giveaway post here. I have also included the giveaway again below.

Falling for a Stranger (Callaways, #3)       Between Now and Forever (Callaways, #4)

Book 3 – Falling For A Stranger

When Drew met Ria on an island, they felt an instant connection. They had one amazing night together before she was killed in a boat explosion. He was devastated and had recurring nightmares about it. Back home eighteen months later he sees her, alive and well, but she’s very secretive and aloof. Knowing he can never forget her, he pulls out all the stops to break past her defenses. With more than her life at stake, will she be able to drop her guard for this man who she knows, too, she could never forget?

All I can say is WOW! I didn’t think any of the other Callaway brothers could be better than Aiden, but I was wrong. Drew is the one for me. I don’t think this love story could have gotten any hotter. I can’t wait to read the next installment just to read more of Drew and Ria.

Book 4 – Between Now And Forever

Nicole and Ryan have been inseparable since they were teens. After their adopted son Brandon was diagnosed with autism, their relationship disintegrated, and was headed for divorce. When Brandon gets kidnapped, they discover he has a twin, who has been taken also. They come together, following clues to find their child, but will they get to him in time? And after being together again, where will their relationship go from here?

This was a very intense read, as you can imagine and a heartrending experience. I could never imagine my child being taken from me. Nicole and Ryan’s strength and perseverance was a testament to their forgotten love and marriage. It will be interesting to see how much Brandon will improve later in the series.

The Callaways: Book 1 And 2 Reviews

Thank you for joining me for The Callaway Series. In case you missed it, you can find the introduction and giveaway post here. I have also included the giveaway again below.

The next three days I will be sharing my reviews for this series. I hope you enjoy my reviews as much as I enjoyed reading about the Callaways. Today, you can read my reviews for books one and two. Come back tomorrow for three and four.

On a Night Like This (Callaways, #1)So This Is Love by Barbara Freethy

Book 1 – On a Night Like This

Sara never understood why her father had always seemed to despise her. Even so, she comes back home and again tries to bond with him, leading to disastrous results. While there, she reconnects with her best friend Emma, along with Emma’s brother Aiden, whom Sara has history with. Aiden recently lost his best friend and is going through a rough patch too. Before they know it, Sara and Aiden are drawing on each other’s strengths that takes their relationship to what neither is ready for.

Past love reconnects are always more interesting than new ones. I loved getting to know these characters deep down.  I’m going to enjoy reading more on this big family. They actually are like the one house on the block that everyone enjoys going to. Having two older brothers, six kids total, my childhood home was that house.

Book 2 – So This Is Love

Being a fire investigator, Emma Callaway occasionally has to work on a case with SFPD Inspector Max Harrison. Their mutual attraction is unmistakable, but they strive to stay professional. While investigating the latest string of fires, the attraction becomes too much to deny. As things begin to escalate between Emma and Max, the arsonist targets Emma. With the case almost solved, Emma discovers just how much her childhood has to do with the fires.

I enjoyed meeting the Callaways in the first book, but this one drew me in even more. I did my best trying to figure out who the arsonist was, and thought I knew, but never guessed the right one. I loved Emma and Max’s courtship, if you could call it that. My favorite part though was the brotherly powwow, watching them take care of their sister. It was very refreshing to have a stepfamily that acted like a true family.

Watch for my review posts of the
Callaway series starting tomorrow.

#1 NY Times Bestselling Author Barbara Freethy talks strong women, hot guys and family series… Check out what she has to say then Read on for more information about this blog tour and all its great prizes!

One of my favorite quotes of all time is by Eleanor Roosevelt: "A woman is like a tea bag. You don't know how strong she is until you put her in hot water."
This quote perfectly describes the heroines in my new connected family series: The Callaways. I love to write about ordinary women who get caught up in extraordinary adventures. My heroines don't always know what they're made of until they're tested.
While we sometimes associate strong female characters with over-the-top roles like vampire slayer or some other kick-ass profession, I believe most women, even the quiet ones, have a superhuman core of strength that enables them to change the world they live in and also to change the men who love them. In my books, the heroine's strength is enhanced, not only by a new and powerful romantic relationship but also her personal journey to find herself.
In the first book in the Callaway series, ON A NIGHT LIKE THIS, the heroine, Sara, has grown up in a troubled family and is estranged from her father. She grew up next door to the chaotic, fun-loving Callaway family and often envied the relationships she saw on the other side of the fence. She also had a huge crush on the second oldest male in the family, Aiden Callaway.
While Sara was a studious, serious girl in high school, Aiden was the charming rebel. As teenagers they were not ready for each other, but now they meet again as adults and both are facing pivotal moments in their lives.
Aiden is recovering from an injury he acquired as a smokejumper and grieving for the loss of his best friend, who died during their last jump together. Sara has come home to repair the relationship with her father, only to discover that there are family secrets that will change everything she thought she knew about her past and her parents.
Sara has to find the strength within herself to risk her heart on a man who could quite possibly break it, to face a terrible lie and to find a way to forgive her father. Aiden also has to find a way to deal with the secret that took his friend's life. Together these two characters find strength within themselves and also draw strength from each other, which is, really, what love is all about.
As a reader, I love books that have layers:  romance, mystery, adventure and surprises. As a writer, I strive to bring those same elements to all of my stories. My heroines have to be as strong as the heroes. And I always hope that they inspire my readers in some way, too. I grew up reading books about strong female characters, and I know those reading experiences helped shaped some of my own attitudes about the kind of woman I wanted to be.

Who are some of your favorite female characters? And what do you love most about them?
