Donn's Hill Review

Donn's Hill

By Caryn Larrinaga

Donn's Hill by [Larrinaga, Caryn]
“Grief can change us . . . rewire our brains and shift the way we look at the world . . .”

After returning home from her father’s funeral to find her boyfriend in bed with another woman, Mackenzie Clair is looking for a fresh start. She thinks she’ll find it in her favorite childhood vacation spot, but returning to Donn’s Hill awakens more than nostalgia. Mac regains a lost psychic ability to talk to the dead, and the poltergeist haunting her apartment is desperate to make her use that gift to find his killer.

Aided by her new roommate—a spirited Tortoiseshell cat named Striker—and the ghost-hunting crew of the nationally televised show Soul Searchers, Mac struggles to learn how to use her powers. But she’d better get a handle on them fast, because someone in town is hiding a deadly secret. If Mac can’t somehow divine the truth, Donn’s Hill will never be the same.

MY REVIEW

Mackenzie Clair’s mother died when she was very young. Now, her father has died also, leaving her with no living relatives. When she finds out that her long-time boyfriend is cheating on her, she kicks him out, finding herself alone for the first time in her life. Deciding to make a fresh start, she moves to Donn’s Hill since she has fond childhood memories of going there with her mother. As soon as she gets there though, a disturbing spirit starts haunting her. That’s when she finds out that Donn’s Hill is one of the most haunted places there is. But that is nothing compared to what she discovers about herself.

Donn’s Hill sounds like my kind of place, I would love to go to a festival with the activities depicted in this story. Mac seemed to be a confident, well-rounded character, and an easy person to like. The postage stamp town and its eccentric characters were perfect too. With a plot of mystery and secrets, and a little cat with a mind of its own, I couldn’t help but be entertained immensely.
