Jake & the Dragons of Asheville Review

Jake & the Dragons of Asheville

By Brian Kacica

Jake & the Dragons of Asheville by [Kacica, Brian]
In a small, sleepy town in North Carolina, thirteen-year-old Jake Winston has discovered he carries a unique genetic trait; one that a covert government agency will stop at nothing to obtain. After the tragic death of his father, a local firefighting hero, Jake's absent grandfather returns and sends him on a journey into the gated forest at the edge of town, bringing Jake face-to-face with a family of ancient dragons thought long extinct.

Determined to grasp the power of the blood flowing through Jake's veins, the agent from the secret ONX facility begins killing every dragon in his path. This forces Jake in the middle of a battle between the government and the dragons of Asheville, where the true potential of his power is revealed.

MY REVIEW

When Jake’s dad died, his grandfather, Don, came to live with Jake, his mother and his little sister. One day Jake coughs and finds smoke blowing out of his nose. Don notices and figures that it’s time to tell Jake the truth about their family’s heritage, that they carry the same DNA as the rumored dragons of Ashville. Don could blow fire, and even though Jake’s dad couldn’t, it appears that Jake can. When the military sets its site on Jake’s connection to the dragons, it is up to Jake to save the people of Ashville, as well as the ‘legendary’ dragons.

I enjoyed this young reader fantasy story. Jake was easy to like, as well as his buddy Arnie. Of course, it was obvious how the outcome would be, but it didn’t matter, as the story was entertaining throughout. I laughed at the subtleness of the lyrics to David Bowie’s Space Oddity. That was a nice touch. I also liked that this gave me a glimpse of Jakes relationship with his dad, although it left out the specifics of his dad’s estrangement from Don. This author has a great imagination. I think this book would appeal to adults as well as adolescents.
