After the Affair: A Novella Review

After the Affair: A Novella

By Anne Marie Wylder

After the Affair: A Novella by [Wylder, Anne Marie]
Love runs forever until it makes a left turn.
A once unwed pregnant teenager, Sara Decker has worked hard to achieve success in sunny Southern California. Mother, wife, and high-paid corporate executive- she had it all. Her American Dream is shattered however when she surprises her husband in bed with their daughter's nanny. It is only on remote Whidbey Island that she finds personal growth and the love of two men: rugged outdoorsman Tom Sawyer and hip millennial Christian Hansen. For the first time in her life, Sara has the courage to throw out convention and embrace love on her own terms.

Maria Rodriguez is the 26-year-old nanny who is catapulted from the role of servant to that of a suburban stepmother, in the Decker household. Her once clandestine relationship with Richard is now fraught with arguments over money. In the end, she will make the ultimate sacrifice so she can hold on to her newfound status as a member of the upper class.

MY REVIEW

Sara had a successful career that kept her traveling regularly, and she was ready to start her planned vacation with her family. But when she arrived home a day early, she discovers her husband Richard in bed with Maria, the nanny. To make matters worse, she then loses her job, and her dad dies, all around the same time. Devastated, she goes to Whidbey, the island where her dad lived, to finalize his estate. While there, she moves into her dad’s cabin, buys a coffee shop, and reenters the dating scene. She becomes more relaxed with her less stressful life, while becoming more in tune with her new way of living.

There was really nothing to draw me into this story. It was just another case of marriage gone bad. Richard was distasteful, Maria was naive and the typical mistress. I’m not really sure how I felt about Sara. I liked her honesty, but the rest of her personality left much to be desired. The way her thoughts always ran toward sexual just felt like it was out of place. In fact, the sexual overture of all three characters didn’t fit well in the book to me. I feel the author could use more connection with the characters in that aspect.
