Maximus: A Harvey Nolan Thriller, Book 1 (Harvey Nolan Mystery Thriller Series) by [Abbey, S. C.]
A missing woman. Her husband—dead before it all happened. Among the mess, throw in a 600-pound tiger. To what extent must Harvey go to reveal a shocking secret?

Dr. Harvey Nolan, a Nobel prize-winning Columbia Professor, isn’t expecting the FBI at his office after his first blood-soaking brush with them many years ago. Trouble again, it seems. In a dark and damp dungeon, a frightened woman wakes up to find herself chained to her bed. But she is not alone. Interpol Agent Katie Moulin, a jaded ex-FBI, grudgingly returns to the ground when things get chaotic with a single divergent event. As if the influx of drugs isn't causing her enough troubles.

Caught in a crossfire between a merciless assassin and the FBI for a crime he didn’t commit, can Harvey clear his name before it is too late? As New York City becomes a hotbed of crime, Harvey's and Katie's lives must intertwine once again. Forced to battle enemies and allies closing in alike, they find themselves surprised by what seems like a web of deceit.

MY REVIEW

Harvey Nolan was a Professor at Columbia University’s Department of Criminology. When FBI agents pay him a visit, he discovers that his friend Christina is missing. Harvey starts trying to find Christina on his own, but the kidnapper catches wind of it. Wanting to throw Harvey off the trail, he plants evidence for the FBI to find, making Harvey look guilty. But with the help of a female agent friend of his, and a mysterious mask wearing vigilante, Harvey won’t be deterred from finding his friend.

The premise of a criminology professor becoming a crime solving sleuth makes for a great read. Although the crime solving was interesting, I felt like it was a bit rushed, and even sporadic at times. The plot was good, the characters interesting, but it just didn’t pull together as smoothly as it should, or could have. I will read more of this series though, as I liked the characters and feel that there’s more stories ahead for them.
