The New Ezra Files

The New Ezra Files

By Lee Wayne

The New Ezra Files by [Wayne, Lee]
On the surface, New Ezra is the perfect city. There is virtually no crime to be spoken of and the most violent thing regulator Aryeh Katz has ever dealt with is a minor altercation.

Aryeh became a regulator because of the stories of heroic "cops" in fictional cities like "New York" and "Los Angeles," but his work as a regulator isn't anywhere near as exciting as the stories Aryeh's grandfather used to tell about the "old cities."

That all changes the first time Aryeh Katz sees a dead body.

MY REVIEW

Aryeh Kats is a regulator at the New Ezra. A regulator is what was known as a cop way back in the old days. Aryeh loved hearing his grandfather tell stories about that time period when he was growing up. The difference now though, is that the regulators only handle minor issues. New Ezra is known as A Perfect City since things like crime and murder doesn’t happen anymore. But then after a murder does occur, Aryeh begins having opposing memories of the incident and everyone else remembers the incident as a different infraction, not a murder. Aryeh then begins to question which memory is real and which is not.

Like Aryeh, I didn’t know which of his memories was the right one. I could understand his confusion. There were other spots that had me confused also. In that aspect, I think the author did well. But I feel that there should have been more clarification once the understanding of what was happening came through. With all of the opposing memories, there was nothing to center on to draw it all together. To me, that’s where the story falls short, leaving it scattered and perplexing. Even the ending needed more, as it felt unfinished.
