Doubloon Cove Review

Doubloon Cove: The Secret of the Ancient Visitors

By Kelly Novak

Doubloon Cove: The Secret of the Ancient Visitors by [Novak, Kelly]
In this first novel of the Doubloon Cove series, we meet tween-aged sleuths Jeffrey and Steven, both 12, and Cindy, 10 as they tackle their first case.

Jeffrey's and Cindy's parents are college professors, and believe that there is a thousand-year-old mystery right here in Doubloon Cove, Massachusetts. But their peers ridicule them, so they are too afraid to pursue it. So it is up to Jeffrey, Cindy, Steven and his brother Frederick, to solve the case. But they must battle dangerous caverns, their own fears, and must learn to work as a team, all while being chased by crooks who have their own agenda.

Set in a time before smartphones and Internet, Doubloon Cove is a thrilling adventure full of danger and revelations. History, mystery, and action come together in this compelling story; it is Nancy Drew meets the young Indiana Jones meets the Goonies.

MY REVIEW

Jeffery was camping out in his backyard fort along with his friend Steven, when they heard strange noises coming from Jeffery’s house. Knowing that his younger sister Cindy was the only one there, Jeffery and Steven barge in, only to find that two crooks were breaking into the family safe. When Cindy calls the police, the crooks get away but leave their pack behind. Inside Jeffery discovers half an encrypted parchment. When Jeffery tells his dad about it, he finds that his dad has the other half and that is what the crooks were after. Intrigued, the kids believe it will lead them to an ancient Viking treasure. But can they decrypt the message and find the treasure before the crooks do?

This young reader was enjoyable, with plenty of comical moments that had me continuously laughing out loud. The sibling rivalry definitely brought back memories of my own that are bittersweet. I liked all the history of the area that was included. That made for interesting reading. And who can pass up a treasure hunt? But I don’t know that I would have been as brave as these kids were. I’m all for adventure, but this would have been too much for me.

An Island Lost Review

An Island Lost

By Henry Shane

An Island Lost by [Shane, Henry]
Henry, a young Polynesian native is cast out by his tribe and set adrift in a canoe. He is close to death by the time he gets picked up by a freighter and returned to civilization. While in the care of a Catholic priest called Bishop, he befriends a boy named Adam, also living with the Bishop and together they devise a plan to return to Henry’s island to rescue Henry’s fiancĂ©e. Seeing an opportunity for missionary work the Bishop joins the youngsters on their quest. But first they must find this illusive island in the vastness of the South Pacific while also navigating conflicting forces surrounding them.

...........................................................................
MY REVIEW

Two years ago, Henry was banished from his island home, leaving his parents and his girlfriend behind. He probably would not have survived if not for a commercial ship rescuing him. He ended up becoming a foster son to a Catholic priest known as the Bishop. Adam, another foster son, wanted to help Henry go back to the island to retrieve his girlfriend, Mena. After a lot of research with the help of a cabbie named Wayne, they were ready to go to the island. When Henry, Adam, Wayne, and the Bishop arrive on the island, the inhabitants aren’t the only ones to get a surprise.

It was refreshing to read about a culture untouched by outside influences. The characters were interesting and the plot absorbing. I couldn’t help but like the islanders, with their simple, basic needs and wants. It was funny how everything worked in harmony until the religious politics took over. Doesn’t that always seem to be the problem? Then of course, the trickle-down effect took over. After that, I wasn’t sure how the story would end. After greed takes over and innocence is lost, how can one go back to how they were before losing it all?

Thrill of Love Tour and Giveaway

NEW RELEASE........
The Bradens are a series of sexy stand-alone romances bursting with rich family ties and everlasting love. These hot contemporary love stories feature alpha male heroes and sexy, empowered women. They're flawed, funny, passionate, and relatable to readers who enjoy contemporary and new adult romance, and women's fiction.

Fall in love with Ty Braden and Aiyla Bell in this epic love story. Fate brings them together, but will tragedy tear them apart?

Do you believe in fate?
World-renowned mountain climber and nature photographer Ty Braden never believed in second dates, much less heart-pounding, steal-his-breath love. But that was before a trip to Saint-Luc, where he met funny, strong, and entrancingly beautiful Aiyla Bell, a ski instructor and fellow photographer whose hopes and dreams, and love of the outdoors, aligned perfectly with his--and whose kisses alone turned him inside out.

After spending five magical days and four sweet, soulful nights falling in love, Aiyla couldn't imagine a day without Ty. But when he asked her to go with him on his next assignment, his reputation for having women at his beck and call stopped her from upending the life she'd worked so hard to create.

Months later fate steps in when a chance encounter brings Ty and Aiyla together for a five-day wilderness event held in the Colorado Mountains. Their deep, passionate connection is stronger than ever, and Ty is bound and determined not to lose her again. But when tragedy strikes and their worlds are turned upside down, their love faces the truest test of all.

When Nash bought his farmette, he had one goal in mind—to provide a loving, stable home for his son. Then again, he never imagined losing his brother, or spending two years sailing around the world with parents who seemed to forget one son was still alive.

Sparks fly from the moment Tempest moves in, and her positive energy and inquisitive nature brings new life into Nash and Phillip’s quiet, confined world. For the first time in years, Nash wants to let a woman into his world, but while his loss made him stronger, that strength came at a price, leaving him walled off and wary of opening his heart again.

MY REVIEW

Aiyla Bell and Ty Braden met each other at an event in Saint-Luc and there was instant chemistry. After five amazing days together, Aiyla refuses to leave with Ty, believing that if they were meant to be, fate would reunite them. A few months later, they each find themselves at another event at the same time. Both have regretted that they parted and decide that fate has brought them together twice, why fight it. Little do they know just how much fate has in store for them.

This was such an emotional read for me. As usual, Aiyla and Ty were the perfect couple. I enjoyed the suspense of the races and the camaraderie of the competitors. But past that, once things started to get intense and unknown, I was like Aiyla, with my emotions running extreme. This was a beautiful story and I think Melissa gave it full justice.

1892—Des Moines

Katherine Arthur and her family are back and it’s time to collect the money Mrs. Mellet left them in her will. The tidy sum will allow the family peace of mind and a future that’s stable and fulfilling. But when things don’t go exactly as planned, Katherine steps up to do more than her share. Hired as a kitchen mistress, her intuition (with the help of a mysterious recipe book), cooking prowess, and work ethic make her the perfect partner for the enigmatic, wealthy woman next door. Then Aleksey Zurchenko arrives.

Violet Pendergrass is a well-heeled, progressive woman with half a fortune in one hand and a plan for enduring prosperity in the other. Resourceful, shrewd, and tough, Violet doesn’t realize her one and only weakness leaves her vulnerable as she attempts to solidify her independence. She sees unparalleled value in Katherine’s gifts and does her best to keep the girl close, to keep her true work secret from her mother and the world.

Katherine’s loyalties to her mother and Violet grow strained and soon her commitment to both frays even further as her feelings for Aleksey grow. Love, hope, joy, secrets buried in walls and hearts; all are threatened by those who claim to care about the Arthurs. Can Katherine separate what’s right and true from what it takes to survive? Are they even different things?

The Last Letter Series of novels by Kathleen Shoop is set in the Midwest of America in the late 19th and early 20th century. "Kathleen Shoop is a master of emotional depth and creativity."  - K.C.Finn, Readers’ Favorite Reviewer

"The Kitchen Mistress is a beautiful story beautifully told. Kathleen Shoop is a master storyteller with a great gift for the first-person narrative, a voice she harnesses so well to create a dramatic effect on readers... One of the things I enjoyed about Shoop's writing is her mastery of the conflict. It is introduced very early in the narrative and it escalates pretty fast. I read the story nonstop, waiting eagerly for the satisfying denouement." -- Romuald Dzemo for Readers' Favorite

"The Kitchen Mistress is a beguiling story, with characters that feel so real the reader could almost believe they walk the same road with them. The protagonist has a complex world to navigate and it is interesting to see how she deals with her secrets, faces the challenges of her relationships and her work, and how she connects to herself. The Kitchen Mistress is delicately written, with a beautifully imagined plot, great prose, and memorable characters. I was seduced by the expert writing and could not stop reading until the last page." -- Arya Fomonyuy for Readers' Favorite

Letter Series Book 1 - The Last Letter

Katherine wouldn't have believed it if she hadn't found the letter...
In the summer of 1905 Katherine Arthur's mother arrives on her doorstep, dying, forcing her to relive a past she wanted to forget. When Katherine was young, the Arthur family had been affluent city dwellers until shame sent them running for the prairie, into the unknown. Taking her family, including young Katherine, to live off the land was the last thing Jeanie Arthur had wanted, but she would do her best to make a go of it. For Jeanie's husband Frank it had been a world of opportunity. Dreaming, lazy Frank. But, it was a society of uncertainty--a domain of natural disasters, temptation, hatred, even death.

Ten-year-old Katherine had loved her mother fiercely, put her trust in her completely, but when there was no other choice, and Jeanie resorted to extreme measures on the prairie to save her family, she tore Katherine's world apart. Now, seventeen years later, and far from the homestead, Katherine has found the truth – she has discovered the last letter. After years of anger, can Katherine find it in her heart to understand why her mother made the decisions that changed them all? Can she forgive and finally begin to heal before it's too late?

Letter Series Book 2 - The Road Home

Find your way home...

1891—Living separately for three years, fourteen-year-old twins, Katherine and Tommy Arthur, have done their best to make each boarding house feel like home. But unrest grows as they are driven to questionable actions just to survive. Meanwhile their desperate mother is confronted with breaking yet another promise to her children. Then a miracle descends. Hope rises on a cold, rainy night and changes everything. If Jeanie could just get word to Katherine and Tommy, she knows she can set their lives right again. Agitators, angels, and dangerous “saviors” illuminate the Arthurs’ unmatched determination and smarts.

1905—Though she tries to forget the awful years that hurt so much, the memories still haunt Katherine. Now, tearful mourners at her mother’s funeral force her to revisit a time in her life that both harmed and saved her in the most unexpected ways. Tommy grieves his mother’s passing as well. He too is thrust backward, compelled to rediscover the events in his life that shaped the man he has become. Will he commit to reconstructing his broken life? The Arthurs come to understand that forgiveness is the only way back to hope, the only way to find all that was good in the misfortune that transformed their lives forever.

The Family Letters

Luckily for author Kathleen Shoop, her ancestors kept hold of letters that are now between 100 and 120 years old. The first set of letters was handed down to Shoop from her mother. They appear in the collection called My Dear Frank. They are sweet and hopeful love letters written to Frank Arthur from his then-fiancĂ©, Jeanie Scouller. My Dear Frank only contains Jeanie’s letters to Frank, as his were lost or destroyed at some point. However, for readers who love to bask in the past, Jeanie’s letters make it easy to understand much of what Frank had said, as she responds as quickly as she possibly could. (Read more about My Dear Frank.)

Available to buy from...

The second set of letters, Love From Mama, was written in the early 20th century. This collection is larger than the love letters as it contains correspondence by Jeanie, Frank, her children, some friends and also relatives. This non-fiction look into the past is a treasure for anyone who loves history in its raw, but real form! (Coming Soon)

...........................................................................
MY REVIEW

Although this is book three in The Letter Series, it entails the continuing story of Jeanie Arthur and her three children, not long after they are reunited. The family has gone through so much in the past few years, but none are ready to share the past they each survived while apart. Things start looking up for the family after they gain room and board with Miss Violet Pendergrass, an independent businesswoman, who takes Katherine under her wing. But as Katherine’s gift of being able to see the dead gets stronger, it creates problems between her and Jeanie.

It’s a sign of a great writer when their story can evoke so many emotions in you for the characters they have created. I can’t describe everything I felt while reading this, but fear and anger were forefront to them. Fear for the family, and anger at the rampant greed going on against them. This series is a must read. It is a heartfelt story of a family during unfortunate times, doing whatever it takes to survive, while keeping their dignity through it all.

Charles' Story Review

Charles' Story

By Steven Wilkens

Charles' Story by [Wilkens, Steven]
A reporter wants to do a feature story on Charles Henderson McCormick, the richest man in town. When no one answers the buzzer at the iron gates to the McCormick estate, and she can find no telephone number listed, she has to do some research. In the background research she is surprised to find that he is a man without a past. No record of a family, his birth, a marriage, or anything else of importance. When she finally does succeed in making contact, he wants nothing to do with her or the story. Just as she is on the verge of throwing in the towel, he has a change of heart. He agrees to do the story, but only if it is on his terms. She didn't know why, but she agreed and the story she got would change her life forever.

...........................................................................
MY REVIEW

Karen had noticed all the unmentioned good deeds and improvements happening around town. With a little research, she concluded that Charles Henderson McCormick, the richest man in town, was quietly contributing to it all. Being a good reporter, Karen decided to write an article about the man. It took ingenuity, but she eventually was able to approach him with her proposition for the article. Charles was reluctant at first, but then counteroffered to tell his story if she would drive him across the country, taking their time and seeing the sites. With an offer like that, how could she refuse?

This was a beautifully written story of regret, redemption, and the journey in between. It was amazing to see life through the eyes of experience, giving an abundance of wise observations and quips. I agree that there is much that goes into a relationship that we take for granted. I loved how their road trip took them on some of the back roads that I also have travelled. All the stops along the way were interesting and I enjoyed learning a bit about it all. It was such a feel good story with an ending that was unexpected, but very satisfying.
