Death of Marianne Review

The Death of Marianne

By A.J. Schmitz

The Death of Marianne by [Schmitz, A.J.]
Going crazy or being stalked? Rebecca isn't sure. And which is worse: ending up in a straitjacket or a pine casket? Neither option seems like a good destiny?

She left behind the life she knew, her friends and family, even her identity. All to escape the terrible reality of what she’s done.

For six long years, her past has haunted her thoughts and dreams. Now it's invading her reality. Or is it only her imagination?

Footsteps in the night, unlocked doors that she’s sure she bolted tight, and the song that won’t go away. Why won’t anyone believe her?

Who can she turn to when danger approaches? When the footsteps start creaking on the fire escape? She will need to summon the courage to quiet the voices in her head and take matters into her own hands. All before a cold-blooded killer gets his hands on her.

MY REVIEW

Several years ago, Marianne left David, her abusive boyfriend. David later married Suzanne and they were expecting their first child. Marianne couldn’t understand why David could change for Suzanne but not for her. This made her become obsessed with Suzanne, causing disastrous consequences. Afraid that David would make good on his threat to kill her, Marianne changed her name to Rebecca Thorne, moved to New York and started a new life. She never got over the incident, causing her to suffer from PTSD. Now six years later, there is evidence that points to David secretly stalking her, but no one believes her.

This read was full of mystery and intrigue. I liked the fact that I couldn’t be sure if it was truly David terrorizing her, or if she was finally having a breakdown, or even possibly already locked up with everything just going on in her head. I would be certain that it was one thing, and then start doubting that and lean toward it being another. I just couldn’t be sure, until closer to the end when it becomes evident. That’s what kept it interesting. Although it started out only slightly interesting, the further I read, the more the mystery drew me in, until the point that I had to get to the end to find out the truth.
