The Castle
By Onid Olfet
Devon was a five-year-old when he learned that those headaches he was having were the result of a cancerous tumor behind his eye. But thanks to his family and good doctors, he survived. Or did he? The Castle is the story of his reminiscences, especially of the crystal chess set he got as a gift after his surgery. But then one of the pieces fell to the floor and shattered. Which piece? The castle, or rook as some call it. Suddenly, Devon awakens in a strange land where he finds a real castle - and some of the same people he knew in his childhood. What is real and what is not? Is he alive or dead? It's a story that will keep you wondering.

MY REVIEW
At five years
old, Devin was diagnosed with a tumor, causing his vision to blur. His surgery
was successful but there was no guarantee that the cancer would not come back.
During the surgery, Devin saw a light. The light became a man who seemed very
familiar to Devin. This man gave him a crystal chess set, and told Devin that
it was special, as was he, and that in time he would understand why. Later,
Devin’s grandfather gives him a chess set that was exactly like the one in his
dream. After one of the pieces gets broken, Devin collapses and finds himself
at a castle. How did he get there and how will he get back home?
This was a
bizarre story. I couldn’t tell if Devin was actually dying or just dreaming
everything. There were things that didn’t make sense to me, and other things
that were out of place. For example, the time period for the story states
around 1900, but a helicopter was mentioned matter-of-factly and they weren’t
even invented until 1936. I could overlook all of that if the story had ended
with a point made. But it didn’t. The author gave elementary writing style, but
I feel that he could improve with experience.
