Chrissie's Run Review

Chrissie's Run

By S.A. Mahan

His name is Daniel. Daniel in the lion's den. That is what the Voice calls him, the Voice that whispers to me in my mind late at night when I drift into sleep. I try to picture what a lion's den might look like. If it is as bad as what I picture, Daniel is definitely in it.

Sixteen and unwed, Chrissie receives news from the Parlor, news concerning Daniel, her unborn baby.

"It is deformed, dear,- the red-headed woman with green eyes tells her as if she is giving her the time of day. It is missing its right foot, part of its right hand, and it probably has a mental deficiency."

Thus begins Chrissie's Run, where in the future New Republic, Chrissie faces a stark choice: give in to mandatory abortion for Daniel and mandatory sterilization for herself, or run!

A safe, mysterious place called Haven is rumored to exist somewhere beyond the boundaries of the New Republic, but where? And should she risk becoming a runner, who are enemies of the state, facing possible life in prison, execution, or worse?

***MY HONEST REVIEW OF CHRISSIE'S RUN***

Chrissie lives in a world where it’s mandatory law to terminate a pregnancy if the fetus is deformed, or if the child is a second daughter or son for a couple. When Chrissie’s unborn son shows a deformity, she is scheduled for an abortion. Wanting to keep her baby, she runs. She has heard of a place called Haven that will accept these unwanted babies. Now being a fugitive, Chrissie finds how hard it is to survive on her own. Then she meets Moses, who claims to be her guide. Along their journey to Haven, Chrissie discovers that what she has been taught all her life is not totally true.

This story takes you on a fantasy ride to a world that could actually happen. I like the way the characters slowly grow on you, even some of the unpleasant ones. The plot has plenty of action with twists you don’t expect, keeping the reader on his/her toes. I enjoyed the futuristic setting of the story, and I look forward to this becoming a series.
