The Butterfly Room Review

The Butterfly Room

By Saurav Dutt

Inspired by the recent efforts of the Joyful Heart Foundation’s NO MORE campaign and an existing relationship with InterAct to help raise awareness around domestic violence and LGBTI rights, proceeds from this book will be donated to Refuge the UK’s largest provider of specialist domestic violence services as well as Southall Black Sisters, Stonewall, Women’s Aid and the charities highlighted above.

For years Vikram and his two sisters have lived in the shadow of their powerful father Rohan. His wife Lakshmi has watched the family slowly disintegrate, living uncertainly within a web of fractured love, deceit and broken promises. Determined to change her own life and those of her children she is now faced with the most dangerous choice of all. A course of events will now place everything she loves, cherishes and holds sacred under direct threat, plunging the family inexorably towards a journey of pain, self-realisation and ultimately heart breaking tragedy.

***MY HONEST REVIEW OF The Butterfly Room***

The Sharma family was of traditional Indian culture. But with a patriarch who ruled with an iron fist, family secrets threatened to destroy the family unit. This is a story that highlights domestic violence, as well as homophobia, not only in the Indian culture but worldwide. I was appalled at the way the patriarch had his entire family too scared to speak up. When the story started, I admired the strength of the older daughter. Then after revealing the entire story, I understood why she had such strength.

I liked the way the author gave the ending, then told the story of how things came to that point. I thought the characters fit this plot perfectly. Whether it was love, fear, loathing, or even pain, I felt the emotions of each character fully. Even with culture differences, I can’t understand how a parent can ostracize their offspring. I can only feel sorrow.
