Philip is a gay man working for a conservative corporation. After his recent promotion, he needs a date for a company function and asks his sister’s new roommate, Emily.
Emily is an actress, waiting tables while starring in local plays and hoping for her big break. She agrees to be Philip’s date for the party, and soon they are attending one event after another together.
Philip and Emily click on many levels. Lines blur as the people they pretend to be start feeling like the people they are, causing a rift with Philip’s boyfriend Jason.
When Philip no longer works for the company, he doesn’t need Emily to play the role of his girlfriend anymore, but to his surprise, he can’t let her go.

Amazon KindleAmazon Paperback "A powerful story that reveals the complexity of the human heart." ~ NYT Bestselling author Russell Blake "His Secret Life proves love defies labels. It can transcend age, race, and gender." ~ Amazon Bestselling author Deborah Brown "An unconventional romance. Our book club enjoyed discussing their complicated relationship." ~ reader J. Nelson
While working
for a prestigious investment firm, Philip kept his homosexuality a secret. But
each time the firm had a social function, he had to bring a “pretend”
girlfriend. His sister tries to help out by suggesting Emily, her new actress
roommate. When Philip and Emily meet, they click on all levels. As Emily falls
in love with Philip, he suppresses his physical attraction to her. But what if
she is his true soulmate? Philip must choose the right path to his future, but
will the other path forever haunt him?
The plot was
intriguing. I liked Philip and Emily right from the start. It seemed they were
destined to be together no matter what. Workplace prejudice is a real thing,
especially in cut-throat, higher positions, making this a believable premise. I
felt the story was well-written, and enjoyed being able to view the turmoil
from both sides of the table. I can’t wait to see what happens in the next
chapter for Philip and Emily.

In this fourth and final installment of the Detective Ace Sloan series, Sloan must solve the murders of multiple members of a prominent Martian family and a distinguished poet all while cultivating a relationship with a new lover and dealing with a sudden serious health issue. More than ever, he must lean on Detective Kate Hammer to assist him in solving the crimes. Like the other Sloan mysteries (The Red Planet Murders, The Red Planet President and Mars at Midnight), this book brims with intrigue and suspense set against the Martian landscape in the 22nd century.
Detective Ace
Sloan is taking a well-needed vacation at the Pleasure Dome Resort when he
notices a flurry of police activity. Even on vacation he can’t pass on a murder
investigation. It seems the son of the wealthy Martian agri-business mogul was
the victim. Then, when another family member is also murdered, Sloan and his
partner conclude that the Billings family has been targeted and they must
unravel the clues quickly to figure out why, and who is the murderer.
I always enjoy
reading about Ace Sloan’s investigations. I had mixed feelings this time
though. I was unhappy with the ending, and that’s all I can say without giving
spoilers. As usual, I liked the plot being on Martian soil, and following a
murder investigation. I’m glad Sloan finally achieves a relationship. That was
a pleasant surprise. After the first three books, I feel like he deserved it.
This was a short read, but had plenty of action going on to keep me engrossed.
