Robyn Hood Outlaw Princess Review

Robyn Hood: Outlaw Princess

By John Reynolds

Robyn Hood: Outlaw Princess by [Reynolds,John]
* A modern take on a classic story
* Robyn is transported back in time to Sherwood Forest
* Based on a full-length musical of the same name

Robyn Howard is a teenage schoolgirl. She lives with her father and her workaholic mother who always seems too busy for her. Robyn dreams of making a difference and wonders why there are so few famous women in history.

After her mother lets her down yet again, she finds herself having a really bad day at school, including quarelling with William, her boyfriend. There is a sudden violent lightning storm and Robyn is transported to a forest, dressed in medieval clothing and surrounded by young women who address her as Robyn Hood. She quickly realises that they regard her as the leader of their band — and that she’s in Sherwood Forest, about to launch a raid on King John and the Sheriff of Nottingham.

Robyn Hood: Outlaw Princess is based on a full-length musical of the same name for which the author wrote the storyline, dialogue and lyrics (music by Gary Daverne). The show has been widely performed in New Zealand, the UK and the USA.

MY REVIEW

Robyn Howard was having a bad day. Her mother left on a business trip without telling her. Because of that, Robyn took her anger out on her father. Then she has a run-in with the school principal and got detention. And as if that wasn’t enough, she has a tiff with her new love interest. Could things get any worse? While in detention a freak thunderstorm comes through and somehow zaps Robyn to another dimension in which she is Robyn Hood, the leader of a ragtag group of women warriors living in Sherwood Forest. In time, she discovers that she is actually one of her own ancestors. It’s a good thing Robyn enjoyed learning history, especially her own. She just may be able to salvage this day after all.

This was a fun, quick read that I’m sure any teen would enjoy. Although it was too short to acquire any depth to the characters, it was still easy to glean some personality from a few of them. Robyn seemed to have a chip on her shoulder, and I think the story would have more value if that had been explored more. It would have rounded her character out more. As it was, I just felt like she was a spoiled brat. I hope this becomes a series because there were too many questions left unanswered.
