MY REVIEW
This is a story
of the author’s journey before and during her mother’s cancer diagnosis, and
how she struggled and overcame grief after Sandra’s death. It is always hard to
process the death of a loved one, but Ms. Heynen had an extremely close bond
with her mother. So, it was inevitable that her grief would be overwhelming.
Reading through her memories of growing up and also her adult years with her
parents, I could feel the love she enjoyed from her family. Her pride for Sandra
was palpable. Even though Sandra had a hard time health wise throughout her
lifetime, she persevered and never complained. She was described as an
unstoppable force, and I have no doubt that was true. I could feel it
throughout the story.
Ms. Heynen
stated that she felt honored and humbled to be Sandra’s daughter, and I could
feel that with every sentence I read. I liked each of the poems interspersed
through the book. Your mother is a special person in your life and I can
understand the devastation in losing her. The sentence ‘Everything that happens
to us in life is material for our own self growth’ is powerful, and something
to always remember.
