Dig Deeper Review

Dig Deeper: A Hallie James Mystery (The Hallie James Mysteries Book 1)

By DK Herman

Dig Deeper: A Hallie James Mystery (The Hallie James Mysteries Book 1) by [Herman, DK]
YOU'LL BE GUESSING UNTIL THE END OF THIS CAPTIVATING MYSTERY!
Hallie James is a seasoned private investigator in a prestigious Pennsylvania firm. Living her dream life, she has a great career, a large bank account, a beautiful home, and a new husband who wants to start a family.

Unexpectedly, her husband takes off with everything, and Hallie's world is torn away. Until she can be convinced to return to her wealthy family, she gets by waitressing and living in her old RV.

Back in her hometown, Hallie reconnects with her hilarious, old friends and her first love, Hank. And she grudgingly gets to know her grandmother's amusing, Karma-blessed boyfriend, George.

Hallie is cynical when George insists someone is trying to kill him. So, she tries to reassure him with a half-hearted investigation. After stumbling upon a series of brutal murders, she changes her mind and goes into full investigative mode.

Tracking the killer, Hallie meets Ben Gordon, the scrumptious brother of a victim. He seems like the perfect partner to help her solve the case. But Hallie and Ben get too close to a monster who enjoys torture and murder.

Suddenly, the killer raises the stakes, and Hallie knows time is running out to solve the case.

Don't miss this fantastic mystery series that's sprinkled with hilarity and romance!!!

MY REVIEW

Hallie James had been taken to the cleaners by her ex-husband in the few short months they were together. She left the marriage with an old RV, a few clothes, and her private investigator tools. Too embarrassed to return to her grandmother’s house in her home town, Hallie moved to a campground and worked at a menial job. She finally bites the bullet and contacts her only family, who were understanding and invites her back home. She immediately reconnects with her two best friends, and even inadvertently runs into her old boyfriend, Hank. Things seem to be looking up for Halley, except for all the teenage girls that keep disappearing. Being a P.I. though, Halley can’t help but investigate, especially so, since evidence starts showing up around her family and their property.

I could see this mystery going in several different ways. Each of the suspects could have easily been the killer. That’s what made it so interesting, trying to figure out which personality could be a mask. I must say, I suspected the true killer early on, but events had me bouncing back and forth suspecting everyone. I liked the character development, but there were still unanswered questions on a couple of them. This author has created endearing characters that I look forward to reading more adventures from.

Thou Shalt Not Kill Twice Review

Thou Shalt Not Kill Twice (The Charlie Singer and Katie Walker Mystery Series Book 2)

By Lawrence J. Epstein

Thou Shalt Not Kill Twice (The Charlie Singer and Katie Walker Mystery Series Book 2) by [Epstein, Lawrence J.]
It is 1940. The world’s greatest mystery writer witnesses a murder by hemlock poisoning. She accuses Katie Walker of the crime. Katie’s detective partner, Charlie Singer, seeks the real murderer. But he can’t prevent the death of the one person who can free Katie. The novel is filled with deceptive twists and the dark and deadly secrets of family life. The case’s shocking revelations change Charlie as he discovers truths within himself about love and justice.

...........................................................................
MY REVIEW

When high profile literary agent Janet Alden is poisoned at a literary luncheon, there is no shortage of suspects. Evidence points to Katie Walker though, as she is the one who gave Alden the salad that was tainted with hemlock. Katie is the protégé of private investigator Charlie Singer, who has no doubt of her innocence. Charlie calls in his friend, Los Angeles Detective Russ Fante, for help. Russ has problems of his own and along with his girlfriend, Summer, decides that now is a good time to break away and go to New York to lend his support.  Since the eye witness is a best-selling author whose word is gold, proving Katie’s innocence won’t be easy.

I really enjoyed these characters and liked the leadoff for the next book. However, I felt lost throughout a good bit of the story. I understood that this was a second in a series, but there was no explanations as to anything that went on in the first book. That made it hard to piece together the tragedies from their past. I didn’t like being in the dark in that aspect, and see it as an oversight from the author. Otherwise, the mystery was great.

Dangerous Changes Tour and Giveaway

NEW RELEASE….
A series of events rattle Emily Lazzaro: a near-death encounter with a pickup on a narrow mountain road, the murder of a would-be client, and an ex-fiancé who won’t let go. Can she survive a police investigation, pressure from her ex’s company, and the suspicions of a possible new love-interest—so that she can make the changes to create a meaningful new life in a special town in southern California?

Available to buy from......

About Emily Lazzaro

Emily Lazzaro is the daughter of Wayne Lazzaro, the winemaker for the Hilltop Sunset winery in the previously published three Brynn Bancroft mysteries. She moved with her fiancé to Ramona, Calif., a rural community near San Diego, following graduation from college with a degree in hospitality. Her fiancé was eager to purchase a vineyard and develop a winery in the up and coming Ramona wine region, which suited Emily’s goals.

However, after moving to Ramona, it becomes apparent to Emily that she is not a good match for her fiancé. She discovers that he does not respect her opinions and insists on making decisions without her input. So she breaks off the engagement.

She decides to remain in Ramona despite her fiancé living there with his new vineyard. She appreciates the unique rocky terrain and proximity to the ocean and San Diego, along with the mixture of fine wineries, artists, and equestrian activities.  She makes her living doing people’s taxes, and when Dangerous Changes opens, we discover she is looking to make a career change.

...........................................................................
MY REVIEW

Emily Lazzaro grew up around wine making, so it was no surprise that she wanted to do the same. She moved away from her parents and with her boyfriend Ed, searched for a vineyard to buy together. But before they found one to buy, Emily became stifled by Ed’s overbearing personality, and she ended the relationship. She later meets Jackson Brekton and they become friends, even though one minute he’s nice and then the next, he’s aloof. In the meantime, Emily and Ed are still friends but Ed can’t seem to let go and still interferes in her life.

I liked Emily and Jackson together. They were so compatible. I don’t understand why Emily didn’t make it clear with Ed to take a hike. Needing a friend is one thing, but being constantly bossed is reason enough to send him packing for good. As with all of Ms. Strand’s stories, there was a multitude of different things going on, but there’s always hidden clues if you just watch for them. That makes it that much more interesting. This was a good introduction to the Emily Lazzaro series.

About the Author
Joyce T. Strand is the author of who-done-it contemporary and historical mysteries set in San Francisco, Napa-Sonoma wine regions of California, or Ventura, California.

Her most recent novels, Overcast Sunset and Landscape for Murder, feature protagonist Brynn Bancroft, a financial guru in transition to winemaker from corporate executive. Brynn Bancroft is a minor character in Strand’s first three novels On Message, Open Meetings, and Fair Disclosure—three mysteries solved by Jillian Hillcrest, a publicist in Silicon Valley whose boss was Chief Financial Officer Brynn Bancroft.

Her first historical mystery, The Judge's Story, tells the story of a Superior Court Judge with a passion for social justice as well as the law who strives to discover the truth behind the mystery of a robbery-murder in a small California town in 1939.

All of her novels are inspired by actual events and/or real people, although they are definitely fictionalized.

Much like her protagonist Jillian Hillcrest, Strand headed corporate communications at several biotech and high-tech companies in California’s Silicon Valley for more than 25 years. Unlike Jillian, however, she did not encounter murder in her career. She focused on writing by-lined articles, press releases, white papers, and brochures to publicize her companies and their products.

She lives with her two cats and collection of cow statuary in Southern California, and enjoys exploring and writing about the growing wine region in the Ramona Valley near San Diego.

She received her Ph.D. from the George Washington University, Washington, D.C. and her B.A. from Dickinson College, Carlisle, PA

The Girl Who Forgot the Butterflies Review

The Girl: Who Forgot the Butterflies

By Marsha Heather Graham

The Girl: Who Forgot the Butterflies by [Graham, Marsha Heather, Graham]
At twenty-one, Travis had his life all planned out. Within the year he would graduate from college, find a decent job, marry his high school sweetheart and then start the family he had always wanted.

But, unfortunately for Travis, Marilyn had other plans which no longer included him.

Unceremoniously dumped, he resolves to win her back. But as he struggles to come to terms with his pain he keeps running into Emma, a smiling redhead who goes out of her way to befriend him.

Annoyed by her cheerful personality, when he is in such misery, Travis nevertheless finds himself in her company more and more. And as their friendship grows into something unexpected, he realizes that she has just as much hurt in her life as he does.

As a romance begins to blossom, a chance meeting with Marilyn proves to Travis that he still has some way to go and that he is a long way from being over her.

Now, he has a choice to make. Will Travis choose the quirky Emma, who seems to be the right tonic for his shattered heart? Or will his preconceived notion of the life he thought he wanted, throw him right back into the arms of the woman who had hurt him so badly?

...........................................................................
MY REVIEW

Travis spent every penny he had to buy an expensive promise ring for his girlfriend Marilyn. But before he could give it to her, she broke up with him. The breakup was a huge surprise, as Travis had no idea that there was a problem with their relationship. The breakup hurt him so much that he felt lost and depressed. Then one day, after accidentally running into her, Emma enters his life, and her endless joyfully, wacky personality breaks through his defenses. But when everything finally starts to fall into place for Travis and Emma to start a relationship, Marilyn decides to waltz back in like nothing happened.

I don’t know what butterflies had to do with this story but I enjoyed it anyway. The story starts with the breakup, so I didn’t feel a bond with Marilyn’s character. In fact, reading on, I didn’t like her at all and could tell she was shallow from the start. Which made Travis look to be self-centered in not seeing it himself. I loved the character of Emma. After she came along, the book became interesting. I think the ending should have been explored a bit more though. It seemed rushed and incomplete.

Career Guide Review

Career Guide: How To Find A Successful Career That Fits Your Personality Perfectly

By Deppy Thompson

Career Guide: How To Find A Successful Career That Fits Your Personality Perfectly by [Sokanu, Thompson, Deppy]
Finding the right career is the most important investment of our time and effort, next to our relationships with family and friends. It’s essential that all human beings find a meaningful way to contribute to this world in order to achieve a sense of fulfilment and happiness. Choosing the right career is a big part of this equation.

Career success has been typically measured by the amount of money, glamour, power and position one has. This way of thinking is thankfully starting to shift.

Success is personal and means something different to each and every person. Your version of success is dependant upon your values, your experiences, and your stage in life. It is about the individual goals you have at each stage of your life and the elements that allow you to feel happy. Therefore, only you can know and understand what’s important to you. Don't make the mistake of defining what your success looks like by comparing it to what others think it should be.

Hands down, the most important career-planning activity you can engage in is finding out your own core values and your own definition of success. If you don’t do this, how will you know what's best for you? and how will you be able to make a career decision and be happy with it?

This book will not only help students just entering the workforce, but will also help anyone thinking of making a career change or questioning their current work/career choice.

We have cut out all the fluff and condensed the information into a concise and easy-to-read little book. Don't let the length of the book fool you, however. The information provided is extremely thought-provoking and, when applied, can change the direction of your life.

...........................................................................
MY REVIEW

Career Guide by Sokanu is exactly what the title says, a guide to helping you choose the career that is best suited to your own personality. The earlier in your life that you learn to look for the principles that will guide you to selecting what you want from life, the better for you. But you don’t have to be just starting out. Seasoned career individuals can use this book to help put them on the right track to a better, more fulfilling, happier future. It is never too late.

I wish I’d had this book while still in high school. It would have helped me tremendously. The tips and questions involving finding your core interests were very helpful, and I got a lot out of the exercise in finding the one explicit thing that interests you above all others. It was also stressed that you should not define your success to what others think it should be. I agree that you should continually assess your career goals and above all, do not get comfortable. Procrastination makes it easy to stay in a rut and let your career become just work. I know this from experience. I liked the comparison of a baby overcoming fear to continually learn, to adults doing the opposite and giving in to their fear.
