It Is About You: How American Government Works and How to Help Fix It
By Deborah Cupples
A nonpartisan and plain-language guide, this book covers basics about American Government and includes a copy of the United States Constitution.
Understanding your government will make you (1) less likely to be misled by agenda-driven politicians or media figures and (2) more likely to have a say in how government affects your life.
The following concepts are among those covered in this book: the Rule of Law; checks and balances; separation of powers; types of laws; people’s rights and the government’s powers; the three branches of government and how they (are supposed to) function; influences on our government; ways that our government is broken; and ways that We the People can help fix it.

MY REVIEW
If you have
ever needed to know how your government works, or even if you just need a
refresher course on it, then this book is for you. It is broken down into
categories making it an easy to ready format. I liked how each category had
subcategories to help you zero in on the things you may have questions about. I
didn’t realize that the executive branch, which is under the President’s
control, employs over two million people, and that doesn’t even include the
military. That was an eye opener for me. I learned a few other tidbits also,
like it is Congress that can declare war, not the President as I had believed.
And also that D.C., the District of Columbia, is not an actual state. Actually
I knew that, but I didn’t know the reasoning behind it. The book mentioned and
explained words that I had never heard before, like Stare Decisis and writ of
certiorari.
This author was
very thorough in her knowledge of the Constitution and all it entails. She
didn’t just say who does what, she explained how laws are carried out. At the
end of the book, she included a copy of the Constitution. I believe this book
is an excellent source to include in your reference collection.
