How King Montezuma Got His Revenge
By Annalisa Nash Fernandea
The legend of the world's most notorious traveler's disease explained through serious history with a hilarious potty humor twist.
Montezuma’s revenge is more than just a legend; it’s legendary for its stinky curse. Centuries after King Montezuma was defeated by Hernán Cortés and his Spanish army, a strange illness befalls legions of people arriving to his land. But this illness isn’t anything ordinary. It leaves a putrid smell in the air and gassy people racing for el baño. It is a battle – a battle your butt won’t win!
This modern twist on Montezuma’s revenge uses original Aztec artwork and includes an actual letter from Hernán Cortés to the King of Spain. Factual references weave ancient history into a contemporary context that is both humorous and historical. Vibrant drawings and lively prose teach young readers about Aztec education and society con un poco de español.
That thunderous blast that can’t be held back? Is it the Spanish troops in Tenochtitlan or the tacos in your tummy?

MY REVIEW
I was not a
very good student of history, so I had no idea that Montezuma was a real person.
I just thought Montezuma’s Revenge was a name given, for no particular reason,
to an unpleasant body function. I like the way the author explained the history
behind this well-known ailment. It made it especially interesting by putting it
in a poetry form. One would think it would be hard to explain the connection of
an Aztec king to a disgusting experience, but the author seems to do it with
ease. I couldn’t help but laugh as I
read the lines filled with humorous prose. I also liked the pictures as much as
the poetry.
The book starts
with the history of the Aztec people, and how they lived. High on their
priorities was schooling and farming. Tradition also played an important role
in their lives. When the Spaniards arrived, King Montezuma was the one that
opened the gate and let them in. He thought them to be gods. Even though the
Spanish Conquistadores were in awe of the Aztec, they still took them captive
and brought about their destruction. Legend has it that Montezuma’s Revenge is
King Montezuma’s curse for the Aztec annihilation.
