More Than Monsters
By J.M. Riou
More Than Monsters is a fantasy novella set in the rich world of Illag. On the frontier, armies and heroes fend off evil monsters and enemy nations; in the interior, the decadent nobility fight each other for every slight. The rulers control everything: churches, magic, armies, peasants, and sometimes they will charter a company of heroes to protect what is theirs.
Cora is a quiet, reclusive young woman. She would rather survive in the wilderness, hiding from monsters, than live in Baron Rethamir's frontier realm. Spending so much time in the mountains has made her an expert on the land beyond the border. Sometimes she will scout for the army or hunt for a nobleman, but now she is ordered to help a band of adventurers recover the baron's stolen treasure from invading monsters.
The heroes sent from the capital are rowdy drunks and their leader is a dangerous madman. He couldn’t care less about the quest, but he is eager to get Cora alone.
Can Cora survive her allies and her enemies? To do so, she must get the baron’s treasure while facing More than Monsters.

MY HONEST REVIEW OF More than Monsters
When Cora is
contracted to scout for the sicarians, deep into monster territory, she knows
her biggest obstacle will be the men themselves. She was safer among the
monsters. The more she tries to avoid the leader, a drunkard with a penchant
for psychotic episodes, the more she angers him. To Cora, this contract can’t
end fast enough, for her to return to the freedom and solitude of being alone.
I could
sympathize with Cora living in a male-controlled environment. I liked her spunk
and confidence though. This was an easy to follow plot, with strong characters.
The monsters were variations of ogres and orcs. The battles were graphic and
intense. It was definitely not a dull read. I was interested from beginning to
end.
